Lessons for Russia From Long Stock Market Shutdowns: QuickTake
Stock trading on the Moscow Exchange has been closed since Feb. 25, one of the longest-ever shutdowns for a market of Russia’s size. The bourse halted equity trading after the benchmark MOEX Index crashed 33% the day Russia invaded Ukraine, the fifth-biggest decline for any stock market. Collapse seems inevitable were the exchange to be reopened now, and Russia has few options to dodge the decline. If history is any guide, keeping trading shut for longer might be a better tactic.
