 How War and Sanctions Make the Ruble Harder to Trade
The blast of sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine sent its currency plunging, dislocating the market and making it hard to know the true value of the currency. The shock created a split between prices for the ruble inside Russia and those quoted offshore by international banks. As trading in Moscow slowly resumed, it became clear the currency had effectively devalued by 25% or more, suffering its biggest drop since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
